Senior Structural Engineer (Basingstoke, Hampshire) Full or Part-Time

Job title: Senior Structural Engineer

Location: Basingstoke, Hampshire

Reports to: Technical Director

Working hours: 37.5 hrs (Part-time working welcome)

Salary: £Competitive

Objectives of the job

The post-holder is expected to use their technical knowledge to deliver structural engineering services for a wide range of projects including refurbishments and new construction primarily in the domestic, educational and industrial sectors. The post-holder will be given responsibility to manage all aspects of their projects and will be the first point of contact with clients, architects and builders for their projects. They will undertake site visits several times a month and will also be capable of undertaking structural inspections of defective structures. The post-holder will be expected to work closely with the existing team, to exchange ideas, resolve challenges and check other’s projects. There will be the opportunity to be creative in the use of the main structural materials to deliver first-class engineering solutions. Context of the job

Modulus primarily provides tailored structural engineering to suit the needs of its clients in a cost-effective manner. Modulus offers a great opportunity for engineers to develop their engineering skills and to progress to being Chartered and beyond. Other key areas of business include: provision of training courses, authoring publications and concrete expertise. The post-holder is expected to use their technical knowledge to deliver structural engineering services to clients.

Responsibilities
  • To establish strong working relationships with local architects, surveyors and builders

  • To prepare fee proposals

  • To develop graduate engineers

  • To carry out structural design for new buildings, extensions and alterations to existing properties

  • To investigate and evaluate structural conditions in existing properties

  • To write technical reports

  • To be the first point of contact for enquiries

  • Provide excellent levels of customer service

  • Manage the business in the absence of the Technical Director

  • Carry out administration necessary for the projects under their control

  • Provide assistance to the Technical Director

  • Checking of projects

Knowledge and experience required for the job

 

Essential experience

The following skills are considered essential to the performance of the role:

  • Chartered (or near chartered) structural engineer

  • Experience in the design of structural elements using concrete, steel, timber and masonry

  • Experience in the design of refurbishment of, or alterations to, existing buildings

  • Ability to conceive the structural arrangements for proposed projects

  • Full driving licence

  • Be able to, for example, access loft spaces, lift carpets or make small openings to expose structural elements in domestic properties (or other similar investigative work)

  • Excellent drawing skills

  • Good writing skills

  • Ability to prepare and confidently deliver written reports

  • Ability to take responsibility

  • Ability to work either in a team or individually

  • Ability to use desktop publishing software

  • Experience in using spreadsheets

  • Ability to use CAD software

Desirable experience

The following skills are considered to be desirable for the performance of the role:

  • Experience in structural engineering for domestic scale properties

  • Experience in carrying out structural surveys and assessments

  • Experience of drainage design

  • Ability to write spreadsheets to design structural elements

  • Knowledge of the structural Eurocodes

  • Clean driving licence

  • Be familiar with structural engineering software

 

Training and development

The following training and development will be provided:

  • Appropriate on-the-job training

  • Suitable training courses identified in appraisals

  • Support to achieve appropriate professional development goals
